ANKLE-FOOT ORTHOSES

Orthoses for Ankle and Foot

External biomechanical devices utilized on the lower limbs which stabilize the joints, improve gait and physical functioning of the affected lower limb are often called ankle foot orthoses or AFOs. AFOs are commonly prescribed to treat a wide range of neurological, walking or musculoskeletal disorders by providing foot clearance, improve balance, decrease risk of falling and help with weakness of lower legs.

AFOs typically range in style and materials such as carbon fiber, plastic or metals with varying degrees of flexibility, stability and strength.

The three main AFO types are:

  • Plastic AFO
  • Accommodate a wide variety of needs
  • Options for maximum to minimum medial/lateral stability
  • Heat moldable for customized fit
  • Swedish AFO
  • Lower profile than traditional plastic
  • Greater airflow for cool comfort
  • Heat moldable and trimmable for customized fit
  • Carbon Fiber AFO
  • Promotes a more natural gait pattern
  • Enhanced strength and stability to control torsion forces.
  • Lightweight and modern, ideal for very active patients.

Along with your physician/medical care team our orthotists will evaluate you for the AFO design that will best compliment your individuals needs.
